Congratulations to the many athletes of the year at the ROPSSAA schools. Below is a copy of the list of athletes as printed in the Toronto Star earlier in the month. You can view the original article here.
First some numbers:
- 6 schools had co-male athletes of the year and 4 schools had co-female athletes of the year
- There were 4 repeat male winners and 5 repeat female winners
- The most sports played by an athlete of the year was 5, accomplished by both Kevin Caister (Mount Carmel) and Jaimie Slana (Loyola).
- Both Robert Hall and d'Youville did not award male athletes of the year this season; does anyone know why? If so, please e-mail ropssaa@gmail.com.

ROPSSAA Soccer "On Probation"
Recently, all the soccer coaches in ROPSSAA were contacted by the folks at the board office and told that the sport was "on probation" next season. What does this mean and why was this action taken? Below is what I have managed to find out so far.
Apparently, last season was an especially difficult one in regards to altercations between players; problems with fans; and especially verbal abuse from coaches and players towards referees. I have been lead to believe that this action was taken after complaints from the group representing referees in the area and threats not to do high school matches any more.
As far as what the probation involves, that has not been made entirely clear. Teams will be monitored more closely at the board office and there will be a greater emphasis on referees reporting problems to those that run ROPSSAA. However, there have been no specific threats made in regards to what exactly are the standards for reportable behaviour and the potential consequences. No one is even sure what thresh-hold must be met in order for the league as a whole to fail this probationary period.
As can be expected, the coaches in ROPSSAA have not taken this news very well. Many believe that the problem is limited to a few frequent offenders but that those in charge simply can't be bothered to deal with them on a case-by-case basis. One former ROPSSAA soccer convener has even written a rather angry and accusatory response, blaming recent conveners for not dealing with disciplinary problems on a timely basis. This convener has even offered to run the show next year in order to ensure that things improve.
What ROPSSAA hopes to accomplish with this probation isn't entirely clear. Many coaches did not see any noticeable decline in behaviour this past season so they fear that they will only discover the standards too late. Others believe that it's simply a show to quiet the referees. They also wonder why referees have not taken this same action in rep soccer where violations are more numerous. They believe it's a big bluff since referees would never give up high school games where they are paid the same as rep soccer but have shorter games; less paper work to complete; and specific people in authority (i.e. principals) o whom they can complain if a coach or team is especially difficult.
Look for this issue to flare up for a few weeks; for the Toronto Star to exploit it for one of their many creating-controversy-in-high-school-sports-where-none-exists articles; and then for the probation to magically disappear after next season.

OFSAA AGM
I apologise for the lack of posts the past week and a half, I was away for a large portion of the time.
OFSAA will host their Annual General Meeting and various competition meetings this Thursday and Friday. One of the most important items of business will be selecting hosts fo the various OFSAA championships. OFSAA runs under a 3-year championship calendar and so hosts as far away as the 2009-10 school year will be awarded.
On the other hand, there are still some hosting duties still unfilled for next year and that could be a problem if no one steps forward. As of this moment the following sports do not have a host (co-ed unless otherwise listed): Girls Field Hockey, Wrestling, Swimming, Badminton, Boys AAAA Soccer, Boys baseball East & West Semi-Finals, Boys Field Lacrosse (Festival Status), and Snowboard Racing (Festival Status).
After cruising the message boards for a while, I have discovered that there is at least one bidder coming forward to host wrestling next year from an area south of Hamilton (Hagersville/Caledonia). There are paarently bidders for field hockey, swimming, and lacrosse too but the names of the bidding groups don't seem to be out there.
OTOH, OFSAA states on its website that if no one comes forward by this Friday, Boys AAAA Soccer, Boys Baseball East & West Semi-Finals (which are necessary in order to hold the final four the following weekend at the Rogers Centre), and Snowboard Racingwill not be held next year.
I had previously heard rumours of ROPSSAA bidding for AAAA Soccer next year after doing so well in 2005 (winning gold, silver and bronze in Mississauga) but, if it hapens, I assume Father Goetz will not spearhead the bid due to recent controversies with the coach. I would also not be shocked to see a ROPSSAA bid to host swimming at the Etobicoke Olympium yet again.
Right now, the only championships that ROPSSAA will host next season are Boys AAAA Volleyball and the Boys Gold Festival.
Other business will include various rules proposals, the most controversial of which would be the annual push to apply international rules to Ontario High School basketball. With the CIS adopting it for the men's game next season (it was already adopted for the women's), there will be more pressure for Ontario to conform. Many of the changes would be fairly easy to implement: longer quarters, coaches calling time-outs with no carry over, rules on traveling, etc.; some would require more training of (usually student) timers such as stop time in last two minutes of game after every field goal; and, most difficult for the schools, lines would need to be repainted and a shot clock implemented and training provided to use it. It's the shot clock that has lead school to vote against it, even as the OBA implemented it this past season. However, the OBA isn't facing annual cost cutting by the Ministry and the school boards to pay for the new infrastucture.

OFSAA Rugby, Track, and Baseball
Boys AAAA/AA Rugby in Brantford
Congratulations to #13 Appelwood who defeated Leaside (East York) 38-10 in the consolation final. The top four teams were:

Boys AA/A Rugby in Guelph

The errors on the OFSAA web site have been worked out and I finally have Mount Carmel's full results from the East Semi-Final.
Mount Carmel lost to Pickering (Ajax) 3-2 in round 1.
Mount Carmel defeated St. Peters (Ottawa) 5-4 (10 innings) in round 2.
Mount Carmel defeated St. Michaels (Toronto) 8-4 in round 3.
Mount Carmel defeated Pickering (Ajax) 10-7 in round 4.
Mount Carmel lost to Birchmount Park (Scarborough) 11-1 in round 5 and were eliminated one game short of the OFSAA finals.

OFSAA Rugby, Baseball, Track, and Lacrosse; ROPSSAA Tier 2 Baseball
One ROPSSAA squad is still alive in OFSAA rugby while the other was eliminated in a close game this afternoon after winning in the morning.
Boys AAAA/AA Rugby in Brantford
#13 Appelwood has advanced to the consolation final after defeating Lambton Central (Petrolia) 10-8 in the consolation quarter-finals and St. Theresa of Lisieux (Richmond Hill) 24-12 in the consolation semi-finals. They will play Leaside (East York) in tomorrow's consolation final.
Boys AA/A Rugby in Guelph
#13 Mentor College defeated Ashbury (Ottawa) 12-8 in the consolation quarter-finals but lost in the consolation semi-finals to Kincardine 15-10. They have been eliminated from further play.
The East and West semi-finals began yesterday in Oshawa and Burlington. They are double elimination format with the top two in each region advancing to the OFSAA finals next week in St. Marys.

Mount Carmel lost to Pickering 3-2 in round 1.
Mount Carmel defeated St. Peters (Ottawa) 5-4 in round 2.

OFSAA Track and Field began today in Ottawa. It was mostly heats today with the exception of some field events. As far as I can tell, only one ROPSSAA athlete won a medal today though it is hard to tell since the regions aren't listed after the school names and some names are very common, especially the myriad of Saint [ ] schools.

Brampton Centennial finished 9th out of 12 teams. They lost to Notra Dame (Burlington) 8-5 before defeating Frontenac (Kingston) 11-7 and Thomas A. Stewart (Peterborough) 6-5.
ROPSSAA did not send a team to AA/A OFSAA.
Congratulations Glenforest for winning the tier 2 baseball title with a 7-3 victory over Heart Lake. With the win, Glenforest completed an undefeated season.

OFSAA Boys Rugby, ROPSSAA Girls Fastpitch, and OFSAA Soccer/Girls Rugby
Boys rugby began today with the AAAA/AAA event in brantford and the AA/A event in Guelph. For the firs time, it is the same pair of schools representing ROPSSAA in the both the boys and girls events: Appelwood and Mentor College. Applewood quailified by winning the ROPSSAA Tier 1 title over Erindale almost two weeks ago while Mentor qualified by virtue of the fact that they were the only AA/A school in tier 1.
Boys AAAA/AA Rugby in Brantford
#13 Appelwood lost 29-0 to #4 Trafalgar (Oakville). They will play #12 Lambton Central (Petrolia) in tomorrow's consolation quarter-finals.
Boys AA/A Rugby in Guelph
#13 Mentor College lost it's opening match 8-5 in overtime to #4 Adam Scott (Peterborough). The will play #12 Ashbury (Ottawa) in tomorrow's consolation quarter-finals.
Congratulations Mount Carmel who won the girls fastpitch championship with a 4-2 victory over Mayfield on Tuesday.

Miracle of miracles! There is finally life in Barrie and it only took three days of action. ROPSSAA rep Joan of Arc finished first in their group after drawing against Holy Cross 1-1, and defeating both Le Relaias (Alexandria) 6-4 and Confederation(Welland) 3-1. They were defeated by L'Essor (Tecumseh) 2-1 in the quarter-finals.

Day 2 OFSAA Soccer and Girls Rugby & ROPSSAA baseball and softball
After day 2 of OFSAA, at least 8 of the 9 ROPSSAA soccer representatives have been eliminated. (The 9th is unknown since the organisers of Boys A OFSAA in Barrie seems to have forgotten that they have a web site.) Two were eliminated after round-robin play while the other six were all defeated in the quarter-finals, three by teams from nearby York Region.

Boys AA Soccer in Timmins
#2 St. Paul finished the round robin with a record of 1-2-1 after drawing against Sacred Heart (Walkerton) 1-1 and losing to St. Mary (Brockville) 1-0 today. They have been eliminated from the tournament after finishing fourth in their group.
Unranked St. Marcellinus finished the round robin with a record of 2-2 after after losing to Beaver Brae (Kenora) 1-0 and defeating Timmins 5-1. They advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing second in their group where they lost 5-1 to Archbishop Dennis O'Connor (Ajax). They are now eliminated from further play.

#1 Campion finished the round robin with a record of 3-0-1 after defeating Anderson (Whitby) 8-0 and Monsignor Doyle (Cambridge) 3-0. They advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing first in their group where they lost 1-0 to Holy Cross (Woodbridge). They are now eliminated from further play.

#7 Iona finished the round robin with a record of 2-1 after losing to Assumption (Burlington) 3-0 and defeating St. Johns (Brantford) 3-0. They advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing second in their group where they lost 1-0 to St. Paul (Niagara Falls). They are now eliminated from further play.
Girls AAAA Soccer in Woodbridge
#8 Mount Carmel finished the round robin with a record of 1-0-2 after drawing against Notre Dame (Burlington) 0-0. They advanced to the quarter-finals after finishing second in their group where they lost 1-0 in penatly kicks to St. Anne (Tecumseh). They are now eliminated from further play.
Both girls rugby qualifiers were also eliminated from championship contention in the quarter-finals today.
Girls AAAA/AAA Rugby in Toronto
#6 Applewood lost to Lakeshore Catholic (Port Colborne) 12-0 in the quarter-finals. They played IE Weldon (Linday) in a friendly match but no score was available. They are now eliminated from further play.
Girls AA/A Rugby hosted by Mentor College in Oakville
#7 Mentor College lost to Sacred Heart (Walkerton) 17-3 in the championship quarter-finals. They later lost to Westlane (Niagara Falls) 12-3 in the consolation semi-finals. They are now eliminated from futher play.
While there are no ROPSSAA scores to post tomorrow, unless the folks in Barrie rediscover the net, I will give a quick run down of the medallists.
Girls Slowpitch: Congratulations to Gonzaga who easily defeated Loyola 13-1 in Monday's championship game. The girls fastpitch final was today and I will post the final result on Wednesday.
Boys Tier 2 Baseball: Heart lake defeated Bramalea 4-3 while Glenforest was all over St. Augustine 11-3 in Monday's semi-finals. They will meet Wednesday in the final ROPSSAA championship of the school year.
